The C\u00e9vennes<\/strong> are located in the Languedoc Roussillon region <\/strong> The term “C\u00e9vennes<\/strong>” refers to a mountain range<\/strong> made up of small massifs at low to medium altitude, straddling the departments of H\u00e9rault<\/strong> (34), Gard<\/strong> (30) and Loz\u00e8re<\/strong> (48). Our village of Mialet<\/a><\/strong> is located to 175 meters above sea level.<\/p>\n

The Parc National des C\u00e9vennes<\/strong><\/a>, created in 1970, is a guarantor of respect for the natural environment<\/strong> and the Biosphere<\/strong>, and is the most densely wooded of all French parks.<\/strong> The Park offers a wide range of excursions and hikes<\/strong> to discover its unspoilt environment.<\/strong> The Gardon<\/strong> river is ideal for trout fishing<\/strong> and swimming<\/strong> (river access 100 meters from the hotel).<\/p>\n

Story of the C\u00e9vennes<\/h2>\n

The origin of the word “C\u00e9vennes<\/strong>” comes from the Gallic “Cebenna<\/strong>“, which was later Latinized into “Cevenna<\/strong>” by Julius Caesar<\/strong>. In 1878, travel writer Robert Louis Stevenson<\/a><\/strong> crossed the C\u00e9vennes<\/strong> with his donkey Modestine, writing about it in his book “Voyage avec un \u00e2ne dans les<\/strong><\/a>
C\u00e9vennes<\/strong><\/a>“.<\/p>\n

This 230 km hike is now known as the “Chemin de Stevenson<\/a><\/strong>“, and corresponds to the GR70 long-distance hiking trail<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Between 1702 and 1704-1705, the C\u00e9vennes<\/strong> were the scene of the guerre des Camisards<\/a><\/strong>. The war lasted 3 years, but the repression of reformers lasted until 1787, when the Edict of Versailles<\/a> was signed. Just a few minutes from the Pradinas<\/strong> hotel and restaurant in Mialet<\/strong>, in the house of Camisard chief Rolland<\/strong>, the Mus\u00e9e du D\u00e9sert<\/a><\/strong> brings to life the Huguenot past and the history of the Camisards<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The chestnut – The fruit of the C\u00e9vennes<\/p><\/div>\n

For many years, chestnut trees were the main source of income for the C\u00e9vennes region.<\/strong> Its fruit, the chestnut<\/strong>, was eaten in many forms<\/strong> (dried, in soup, roasted…), its leaves were used as fodder and its wood was used for carpentry and furniture. Today, although still present in the C\u00e9vennes<\/strong>, chestnut trees are rarer, often giving way to holm oak or maritime pine.<\/p>\n

On the C\u00e9vennes paths – Mialet<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n

From 1709 onwards, the C\u00e9vennes<\/strong> turned to silk production<\/strong> (at this time, an exceptionally harsh winter was fatal to many chestnut trees, which were replaced by mulberry trees, whose leaves are food for the silkworm). Silkworm rearing<\/strong> is therefore developed here, and the entire production chain (from cocoon to reeling of silk thread to weaving) is carried out by hand in the silkworm nurseries in the C\u00e9vennes<\/strong>.
The Pradinas hotel-restaurant<\/strong> is one of the oldest silkworm nurseries in the C\u00e9vennes.<\/strong> In the 19th century, the switch from silk to synthetics signaled the end of silk production in the C\u00e9vennes<\/strong> and in France<\/strong>. The Silk Museum<\/a><\/strong> in St Hippolyte du Fort presents the history of silk in the C\u00e9vennes.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tourism and culture in Le Pradinas in the C\u00e9vennes<\/h2>\n
